Gender and Ethnicity: The Political Incorporation of Latina State Legislators

The political incorporation of communities of color has increased significantly in the last twenty-five years. Has electoral participation among women of color been below, equal, or superior to that of men of color? Lastly, will the presence of elected women of color change the nature of policy making in any systematic way? The research analyzes patterns of election and policy advocacy for Latinas in state legislative office in Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas for the period 1990-1998. We then conducted an exploratory analysis of legislative priorities, strategizing, and success among a group of Latina and Latino legislators in California and Texas. To what extent are these patterns of gender representation replicated in patterns of ethnic representation? Do states with higher levels of gender representation also have higher levels of ethnic representation in their state legislatures? Are the trends developing at similar rates?
All oral presentations will occur on Saturday, February 15 from approximately 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The time allotted for each oral presentation is 15 minutes (12-presentation, 3-questions) with 5 minutes between presentations. Please have your presentation saved to a flash drive. The following presentation equipment will be provided: screens, projectors, PowerPoint soft-ware, pointers, and computers. If Apple equipment is needed, you must provide your own projectors and computers. It is STRONGLY advised that all presenters use the equipment provided.
All poster presentations will take place on Saturday, February 15 from approximately 1:30 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Your poster may be displayed all day but must be in place no later than 10:00 a.m. All posters will be displayed on the provided boards. Push pins will be provided.
