About TRIO Student Support Services

TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded academic support and student success program, designed with the purpose and goals of increasing the retention and graduation rates of participating undergraduate students at the University of North Texas. TRIO SSS serves first-generation, low-income, and students with disabilities by helping them navigate and overcome academic, social, and financial barriers to degree completion. 

UNT TRIO SSS was funded to receive $2 million for the 2020-2025 grant cycle, and to serve 258 participants. TRIO SSS is required to provide the following core services to student participants:

  • Academic tutoring and support (including campus resource referrals)
  • Course registration assistance (supplement to primary academic major advisors)
  • Assistance in completion of financial aid applications (FAFSA, UNT GSA)
  • Financial literacy education and counseling
  • Assistance in enrollment to graduate/professional school

SSS Objectives

UNT TRIO SSS program grant objectives are measured by the following:

  • Persistence Rate: 87% of all participants served will persist from one academic year to the beginning of the next academic year
  • Academic Standing: 87% of all enrolled participants served by SSS will meet the performance level required to stay in good academic standing at UNT
  • Bachelor's Degree Attainment: 65% of new participants served each year will graduate within six (6) years
