Why did you decide to work for TRIO?

My career with TRIO began at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX.  20 years ago, I answered an ad in the Austin newspaper about a job opportunity to work with disadvantaged youth. At the time, I had two teenage daughters and I thought this age group was perfect for me. It was a part-time job, but I was able to hone my skills enough to be promoted to a full time Talent Search Advisor and years later, a Program Coordinator. Eventually, I became interested in the Administrative/Grant-writing side of Talent Search leading to a job as the Program Director. My drive to help inspire and guide teenagers to improve their lives by achieving educational and career goals is what keeps me working in TRIO, specifically Talent Search.  I believe in what TRIO does for the youth of America.  I’ve seen TRIO change not only the lives of our students, but also their children and their children’s children.

What is your favorite thing about working with students?

I love inspiring a student to start working on their goals. I love seeing the look on their faces when I get to show them a new college campus they’ve never seen before. Ms. Maloney currently serves students attending Strickland Middle School

Personal Fun Fact:

I also serve as a volunteer for Denton CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocate. Growing up in the foster care system in the 70’s was a traumatizing experience, but it served to give me a new set of eyes and ears to help listen to, serve and advocate for today’s foster children. Every child deserves this care and attention.
