A study
completed in 2003 indicated that the United States needs 13.4 percent more special
education teachers, which translates to about 54,000 openings in schools across
the country. Children with autism are a significant group among special needs
students. Approximately one out of 160 8-year-olds
in the U.S. show signs of autism.
Welcome to the spring 2009 issue of Results! As the semester draws to a close and commencement plans are underway, this is both a time of reflection and hopeful optimism for our students, faculty and staff.
Well
done Drs. Mary Harris, Jimmy Byrd, and Jeanne Tunks from the Department of
Teacher Education and Administration on securing a grant for $19,000 from the
Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The $19,000 is UNT's portion of a
larger grant to Stephen F. Austin University for the Texas Educational Research
Center for Educator Preparation (TERCEP). SFA and UNT along with other
participating institutions (Lamar University, Texas Tech University, and
University of Texas at El Paso) are engaged in a research study about the
factors affecting hard to staff schools.
We are very happy to announce the awarding of a $148,000 grant to Drs. Marc Cutright, Bonita Jacobs, Amy Fann, and Beverly Bower all of the Higher Education Program in the Department of Counseling and Higher Education.
Gary Nye has been named as the winner of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration Edgar L. Morphet Dissertation Award. This award recognized the significant scholarship of his dissertation: Principal Leadership Beliefs: Are Personal and Environmental Influences Related to Self Efficacy? Gary received the Ed.D.
Dr. Mary Estes and Dr. Lyndal Bullock have received another training
grant from the US Department of Education. The grant is entitled Graduate Preparation for Transition and Instructional Leadership for Services to Students with Low Incidence Disabilities: Emphasis
on Academic and Social Success in LRE through Implementation of
Evidence-Based Practices and Instructional Programming and provides $599,988 in funding over a three-year period.

Dr. Pamela Harrell and Dr. Colleen Eddy's grant proposal Dallas Xtreem Science and Mathematics Institutes, a Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Teacher Quality Grant, was funded for $100,000 over a two-year period.
Dr. Janie Huffman, Associate Professor in TE&A,will be honored at the Doctoral Graduation Ceremony on Friday evening. Janie will receive the “Faculty Award for Excellence in Doctoral Mentoring.” She has been nominated by one or more of her students every semester for this award. We are proud of you Janie. I hope many of you canattend and see her receive this well-deserved recognition.

109 out of 278 in national rankings in the 2010 edition of “America’s Best
Graduate Schools,” published online by U.S.
News and World Report magazine. The

UNT College of Education receives $1 million endowment to fund scholarships for students pursuing superintendent certificationDENTON (UNT), Texas (Jan. 23, 2009) – The University of North Texas College of Education has signed a memorandum of understanding with Dallas-based Southwest Securities, Inc., establishing a $1 million scholarship endowment to benefit students in the college’s superintendent certification program.
